What are the reasons for Jack Worthing's frequent visits to London in The Importance of Being Earnest?
Ans. In the play The Importance of Being Earnest, Jack Worthing plays a vital role as one of the main characters. He has a double identity in the play. In the country, where he has an estate, he is known as Jack Worthing, a righteous person. On the other hand, in London, he holds the name 'Ernest'. In the country, he is the guardian of a pretty girl named Miss Cecily Cardew. Cecily lives there under the care of a governess, Miss Prism. When Jack Worthing wants to visit London, he says to Cecily and Miss Prism that he has a younger brother in London who leads an irresponsible life there. As he often falls in trouble, Jack visits London to help his younger brother Ernest. Though he has no brother, he says that only for pleasure. In the later part of the play, he falls in love with an aristocratic girl in London. Gwendolen Fairfax, the daughter of Lord and Lady Bracknell, is the darling beloved of Jack Worthing who inspires him to visit London.
