Death of Sir Roger - Part B
How does Steele portray the character of the Clergyman? [NU. 2018]
/Write a short note on ‘The Clergyman’.
The final member of the Spectator's Club is a nameless clergyman. This man is last in the essay because he is consistently absent from social gatherings or meetings. He is very religious, learned and philosophic. He possesses very poor health and so he does not come to the Club regularly. He has won many devoted followers by means of his honesty and integrity. Moreover, he has authority on religious matters and talks on religious subjects with confidence.
Steele claims that the clergyman seems to always speak upon something divine. He has little interest in the world and its affairs. He just wants to overcome worldly affairs in order to make himself fit for the next world.
