Speech on East India Bill - Part B

  • What was the aim of the East India Bill? [NU. 2016, 2018, 2020]

In the East India Bill, Burke has displayed that the British ruler misuses their power. The British governor confounded/misled the army to rule India.

Edmund Burke in his speech “East India Bill’’ represented the tyranny and inhuman behavior/treatment of the company towards the Indian people. He understood that the Company was not only exercising political power but also abusing it badly. As a member of the House of Commons, Burke found the horrible picture of the Company's oppression in India.

Burke draws a horrible picture of the company's mismanagement and corruption and the suffering of the Indian people. He argued that it was Hastings and the Company's government who have waged a war of criminal aggression against the people of India. Burke also points out that the Company has been run by the fortune seekers whose only aim was to collect wealth by any means.
