Write a note on Sir Roger de Coverley. [NU. 2018]

/Who was Sir Roger de Coverley?

/What are the characteristics of Sir Roger de Coverley?

Sir Roger de Coverley is a fictional character created by English writer Joseph Addison and his friend Richard Steele. He is a central figure in "The Spectator," a daily periodical published in the early 18th century. He is depicted as an English country gentleman, representing the values of rural life, traditional manners, and moral integrity.

He is the first member of the Spectator's Club. He is a gentle man of fifty-six of Worcestershire, a non- metropolitan county of England. He is very singular in his behaviour towards others. He behaves in an odd manner only when he is sure that people around him are in the wrong. He is often in contradiction to other people but this does not create him any enemy because of his gentleness. He is a kind-hearted, benevolent, and slightly eccentric figure who embodied the virtues of generosity, loyalty, and honour.

Thus, Addison and Steele provided commentary on various social, political, and cultural issues of their time. Through Sir Roger, they satirise the contemporary English society.
