Joseph Addison, an English essayist, poet, and playwright, is renowned for his wit and humor. His humour is serious thinking about the fact that is strange in a practical situation in portraying the contrast between what actually is and what ought to be. It is chiefly ironical and satirical.
Addison's use of irony and satire often serves a dual purpose of entertainment and gentle correction of societal follies. For example, the behaviour of Sir Roger i.e. he makes loud noises to make others less is humorous in the essay, Sir Roger at Church. As well as, when he says that the knight will suffer nobody to sleep in the church, he is found asleep. There is also an indirect attack on the superstition with his mother's dream about his dignity in "The Spectator's Account of Himself".
